Finding the perfect skincare routine for your face is a big task, but it's not the only routine you should look for. While we can totally understand why you prioritize your face — because everyone sees it — taking care of your body is also essential. Just as you should use a facial cleanser, exfoliator, and moisturizer (etc.) on your face, you should also use skin care products on the skin below your neck. Ultimately, you won't be happy with a bright, smooth face while your hands are dry and rough.
If you're used to occasionally washing your body with regular soap and applying a layer of moisturizer semi-regularly, it's officially time to create a skincare routine for your body. Not sure how to get started? We've broken down your basic body care routine into five simple steps, and we're sharing everything you need to know here.
Step 1: Cleansing If you already have a skincare routine for your face, you'll probably be able to guess this first step. No matter what part of your body you care about, the best way to start is with a thorough cleanse. For your body, this means using a body wash made for it — don't expect a face wash to do the job. Look for a gentle cleanser that won't irritate or dry out the skin. Use a loofah, cloth, or hands to work up a lather, then be sure to rinse before moving on to the next step.
Step 2: Exfoliate Exfoliating with facial scrubs can be difficult. You don't want to scrub your skin excessively for fear of irritation, but you should do it regularly so dead skin cells don't leave your skin looking dull. Worse still, every skin tolerates different frequencies of exfoliation. Fortunately, your skin is more resilient in this regard. Because your body is usually stronger than your face, you won't need to worry as much about excessive rubbing.
Two or three times a week, exfoliate your body by adding sugar scrub to your shower routine and gently massaging it into your skin. Make sure to focus on the elbows, knees, and heels, as these are likely to have rough spots that need extra exfoliation.
Step 3: Shaving the right way Even if you've been shaving for more than half your life, it's not without mistakes. In fact, there are many mistakes you may be making in this part of your body care routine. (See 8 shaving mistakes you might be making — and what to do instead.) To shave the right way, start by spending some time in the bathroom. The water will help soften the skin and prepare it for shaving. Once the moment comes to reach the blade, take it slowly. Apply shaving cream to your skin and carefully move the razor in the direction of the hair growth rather than the other way around.
Step 4: Moisturize from head to toe Cleansing, exfoliating, and shaving all have one thing in common — your skin needs to be moisturized afterward. While your skin is still moist after previous activities, this is the perfect moment to moisturize the skin. Spread moisturizing cream or lotion all over your body from your neck to your feet (hello, soft feet!), and let it absorb before getting dressed.
Step 5: Get Fake Sunny Skin No skincare routine should involve sunbathing, but that doesn't mean you can't get a beautiful tan. If you want to make your skin bronze, rely on self-bronzing products. Try L’Oréal Paris Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Water Mousse, a clear bronzer that will help brighten your skin over time. Apply it evenly three times a week, making sure to use it carefully around the joints to obtain a uniform, streak-free tan.
Your skin care routine isn't the only thing you can transfer to your body. Body makeup is also in vogue! If you are a fan of contouring with face makeup, you will need to learn how to contour your body as well.
